The festival takes place on Monday 12th October 2026 across various venues in Dumbarton plus one in the nearby village of Balloch. Please check our Programme page for specific times and locations. Most events are held indoors, so rain won’t stop the fun! For any outdoor events, please come dressed for the Scottish weather!

Yes, for all scheduled sessions. While tickets are free, we require bookings to manage capacity and ensure safety.

• Children: Every child needs a reserved spot - see Programme page for event details and link to Eventbrite.

• Adults: Adults do not need a ticket but must accompany their child(ren) if they are under the age of 14 (and if your teen allows it, please feel free to come along to anything with your 14 - 17 year olds too!)

• Drop-ins: Activities at Dumbarton Parish Church Hall and outdoor trails do not require booking.

• Cancellations: If you can’t make it, please cancel your reservation at least 24 hours in advance via Eventbrite so we can offer the spot to someone on the waiting list.

The festival is completely free thanks to our lovely sponsors - The National Lottery Community Fund and the Scottish Book Trust. No hidden fees!

Yes. Children up to the age of 13 must be supervised by a responsible adult (18+) at all times.

We welcome families with children and young people aged 0–17. Each session on the programme includes an age recommendation (e.g., "Best for ages 4-7") to help you choose the right fit.

Yes! A pop-up children's bookshop runs from 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM in Dumbarton Parish Church Hall courtesy of Moonlight Rainbow Books.

• We observe a Quiet Hour from 12:30 PM – 1:30 PM

Some authors and illustrators may have small selections of their books available to buy or sign at their respective events. You are also very welcome to bring your own copies for signing!

• Dumbarton Parish Church Hall & Outdoor Trails: Yes, these activities are drop-in. Come and go as you please.

• Other Venues/Events: These are timed sessions. Please arrive 10 minutes early to find your seat. Late entry may disturb other attendees.

• Privacy First: Please only photograph your own children. Avoid posting close-ups of other children’s faces on social media without parental permission.

• Official Photos: Festival photographers will be present. If you prefer not to be photographed, please speak to a staff member upon arrival for an opt-out lanyard.

The 2 Rivers Children’s Book Festival is organised by a small, passionate team of local volunteers including educators, heritage enthusiasts and creatives. We are a not-for-profit community group dedicated to celebrating books and storytelling in Dumbarton.
