🚗 Getting to the 2 Rivers Children’s Book Festival

Directions below are to the High Street area of Dumbarton. Please see the accessibility guide (coming soon) for details about getting to venues outside of the town centre.

Dumbarton is easily accessible by train, bus, bike and car.

🚆 By Train

Dumbarton Central Station is the closest station, located just a short walk from the main festival venues, while Dumbarton East Station is around a 15 minute walk.

  • From Glasgow Queen Street: Direct trains run frequently (approx. 20–25 mins). Look for services to Helensburgh Upper, Balloch, or Fort William that stop at Dumbarton Central. See https://www.scotrail.co.uk/ to plan your journey and buy tickets

  • Accessibility: The station has step-free access to platforms via ramps. If you need assistance with mobility, please contact ScotRail in advance or speak to staff on arrival.

  • From the station, it’s a pleasant 5–10 minute walk into the High Street. Follow signs for "High Street" or "Town Centre". The route is generally flat and paved; suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs.

🚌 By Bus

First Bus and McColl's routes serve Dumbarton.

  • Buses often stop near Dumbarton Castle or on the High Street. Check your specific route on https://www.firstbus.co.uk or https://www.mccolls.org.uk/timetables

  • Most buses stop close to the parish church hall. Ask the driver to drop you off as close to the High Street entrance as possible if you have heavy bags or young children.

🚗 By Car & Parking

Dumbarton is served by the A82 and is easily reachable by road. Dumbarton is only around 30 minutes from Glasgow City Centre by car (traffic dependent!). For more details check out AA's Route Planner to plan your journey https://www.theaa.com/route-planner/route

  • There are several free car parks near the High Street including the Quay and St Mary's Way Carparks

  • Blue Badge Holders: Designated bays are available within the free carparks. Please display your badge clearly.

🚲 Cycling

Dumbarton is part of the National Cycle Network (Route 7). Secure bike racks are available near the High Street. Please ensure bikes are locked and out of pedestrian pathways.
